From Ancient Towns to Modern Tel-Aviv
Another wonderful day in Israel! We started off the day with something new for us - seeing some really, really old stuff. Our first stop for the day was the ancient city of Zippori, where Jews, pagans, and Christians lived side-by-side for hundreds of years. We were lucky enough to see some fabulous mosaics dating back to the fourth century C.E. including a beautiful mosaic floor depicting scenes of the Greek god Dionysius. They may have decorated the home of the great Rabbi Yehudah Ha-Nasi over 1,500 years ago!
Zippori gave us a great look at the unique blending of cultures in the ancient world. After our trip to the past, we headed to the most modern of Israeli cities, Tel Aviv. We had a great time checking out the crowded market (or shuk in Hebrew) and stores near Ben Yehuda street. After lunch, we made our way over to Rabin Square where we talked about the late prime minister and the legacy of his assassination. Israelis hanging out in the area were nice enough to talk with us and share their memories and opinions of this pivotal moment in Israeli history.
We ended the day with a relaxing evening at the beach followed by an acoustic concert and a night out on the town. Tomorrow, it's goodbye to Tel Aviv as we head off to Jerusalem!
