Street Art Tour of Tel Aviv
We began our evening in Tel Aviv with a street art walking tour, guided by artist, Niro Taub. He walked us through the Florentine district and showcased the many ways local artists engage in a creative discourse on the city walls: examining the political climate in Israel, Israeli society, pop culture, and other areas of public interest.
His tour detailed the positioning of Tel Aviv as a center for non-religious liberal-minded groups, and explained how it has become increasingly gentrified.
His distillation of the artwork explored a narrative that pushes back against that which is constructed by the current government.
Through the works of the street artists, a counterculture and its domain for political discourse is revealed, leaving the viewer with much more to digest than a simple "tag" or fragment of vandalism.
The tour was engaging, educational, and rather entertaining.
