Tzvat A Day
Hello and welcome to day three of our Shorashim journey. We woke early at the kibbutz in Golan and left for the “capital of the north,” Tzfat
It was still cold and rainy so we had to abandon our hiking plans. We did, however, stop for some fresh air and an insightful political discussion at the Syrian border. Looking across the flooded fields and over the fence into Syria is unlike anything myself and probably many others had ever experienced. It was difficult and moving to see the white flowers of the almond tree next to barb wire fences and land mine signs. As we were leaving a UN vehicle arrived as if to emphasize the reality of where we were.
We spent the next few hours on the bus enjoying stunning scenery, culminating in crossing the Jordan River before beginning our ascent into Tzfat. Tzfat's older areas date back to the 15th century with the modern portion being built during the 50’s and 60’s and is considered a city of Jewish Mysticism. We visited a couple of synagogues and met a few of the colorful characters that call the medieval city home.
Back on the bus the entire group was filled with cheer and good vibrations as we headed towards the homes of one of our Israeli group members. Ellie and her mother’s boyfriend welcomed us to their beautiful house where we enjoyed a few snacks and relaxed after a busy day.
Finally, after a long drive to Tel Aviv, we had a night out on the town. Split into several groups, we all enjoyed a taste of the capital cities night life, trying local drinks and learning about the local culture in a less structured setting. The day was as long as it was fun and our happy bunch savored the evening before beginning the next adventure.
