Long Way to the Homeland
Early Sunday afternoon, on a hot Father's Day, 40 young adults came together at O'Hare's international terminal to embark on a trip to the Holy Land. After a nine and a half hour flight to Vienna, a two hour layover, and a final three hour flight, we landed safely at Ben Gurion airport, just outside Tel Aviv. Our Israeli peers awaited, with song, balloons, and fanfare; they joined our ranks, and in a sweaty circle, arm-in-arm, we kicked off our trip in an Achim circle.
Money exchanged and buses loaded, we hit the long and windy road north to Kibbutz Afik, a quaint guest house. After a dinner of chopped salads and schnitzel, we got our room assignments, dropped our bags, and met reconviened for some icebreakers and introductory games. Tomorrow promises to be exciting, and jam-packed with hiking, lookouts, and kayaking.
