Day Two!
The day started early, but I'm sure we all got plenty of sleep considering how tired we were yesterday.
After a good breakfast, we began our journey into the Golan Heights. Our first stop was a lookout point over Israel from the Golan Heights. There, we learned about the area's history and geographic importance in addition to a bit history about the Israeli-Syrian conflict. We also had the opportunity to go into a Syrian bunker.
After that stop, we continued our journey further into the Golan Heights, where we hiked. Our first real challenge was getting over a muddy pond by stepping on stones. Some of us made it across clean and some ended up a little muddy. Further down the trail, we started making our way down into a ravine. Here, we started to see more green trees, flowers, and running water. The trail got a bit rocky, which was challenging to some, but it was worth it to make it to the natural pool. A good number of us jumped in and it was refreshing after being in the hot sun. We spent some time there before getting out and continuing the hike. The trail was still pretty rocky but we did get a good view of a waterfall and the Sea of Galilee once the trail flattened out.
Once the hike finished, we were treated by our bus driver to fresh watermelon, which was the perfect post-hike treat. From there, we went to lunch and changed into dry clothes.
Our last stop was to the top of a volcano that overlooked Syria. We talked more about the conflict between Israel and Syria and about the civil war going on in Syria. I think it was interesting to learn about the Golan Heights and its significance to Israel. The whole day went together perfectly as we learned about the area while getting a chance to explore it as well. Tonight, at sundown, starts our first Shabbat in Israel and I'm sure I'll be a memorable experience for all us. I'm looking forward to it!
