Our Birthright Family
Today after breakfast we went to Mount Hertzl and discussed many important figures including: Theodore Hertzel, Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin, and others. Multiple people in the group talked about different people on Mount Hertzl. The Israeli soldiers wore their uniforms and shared personal stories about some of the soldiers they know who have passed away. This brought tears to so many of us and it was an incredibly emotional and moving experience. After hearing these personal stories and connections, we learned about Hanna Senesh and one of the Israeli soldiers sang "Halicha le'kesaria" while another translated the song into English. Hearing this piece of poetry brought tears to some of our eyes and was such a powerful experience. The experience at Mount Hertzl was meaningful to everyone as we learned about and appreciated each person we discussed. As a group, we also acknowledged why it is so important to learn about these individuals and remember them and their contributions to Israel.
After, we drove to Ben Yehudah street. When we arrived, we ate lunch and went shopping. We were able to experience the culture in Israel by eating different foods such as falafel, schnitzel, pita, hummus, and other foods. We also saw many stores selling jewelry and household items that symbolize the Jewish religion and culture. Being able to bring home a piece of Israel and have something to wear that reflects the Jewish culture is so special and meaningful. When we left Ben Yehudah street, we went to Yamin Mosheh where we learned more about the history of Israel and about Judaism. We then returned to Kibbutz Almog and prepared for Shabbat.
Upon arrival to the Kibbutz, we were given some time to get ready and the group changed into clothing appropriate for Shabbat. After, we recited prayers for Shabbat together and really came together as a family for our last Shabbat together. We ate dinner together as a group and then spent time with one another around the Kibbutz. It was really amazing how the group became so close and cohesive after only spending ten days together. Feeling like we were a Birthright family made the experience that much more special.
